{"id":979,"date":"2018-01-03T17:57:21","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T21:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.staffworksinc.com\/?p=979"},"modified":"2018-01-03T17:57:21","modified_gmt":"2018-01-03T21:57:21","slug":"give-employees-constructive-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.staffworksinc.com\/2018\/01\/03\/give-employees-constructive-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Give Employees Constructive Feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As managers, we intuitively know that giving and getting honest feedback is essential to grow and develop, and to build successful organizations.\u00a0 So why is it that many of us put off giving feedback to our employees?\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s because there are so many ways to mess it up.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some common feedback mistakes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking out only when things are wrong.<\/li>\n<li>Providing generic praise without specifics or an honest underpinning.<\/li>\n<li>Waiting until performance or behavior is substantially below expectations before acting on it.<\/li>\n<li>Giving negative feedback in public.<\/li>\n<li>Criticizing performance without giving suggestions for improvement.<\/li>\n<li>Not conducting regular performance reviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly, giving and receiving constructive feedback is a skill that must be honed.<\/p>\n<p>Developing proficiency in this area is essential to building good relationships with, and motivating peak performance from, your team.\u00a0 To help get you started, here are four tips for providing feedback the right way:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be proactive.<\/strong>\u00a0Nip issues in the bud and avoid messy interpersonal tangles that result from neglected communication.\u00a0 If you meet with employees regularly to give feedback, it conveys, \u201cYour success is important to me, so I want to be accessible to you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be specific.<\/strong>\u00a0Although it\u2019s not easy to provide negative feedback, it\u2019s important to be as clear as possible by giving specific examples that illustrate your point.\u00a0 Instead of saying, \u201cYour attitude is bad,\u201d say, \u201cWhen you miss deadlines, then cross your arms and look away when I discuss it with you, it gives me the impression that you don\u2019t care about the quality of your work.\u00a0 Can you help me understand this behavior\u00a0better?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop a progress plan.<\/strong>\u00a0Be clear about the specific changes in behavior that you expect in a specific period of time, and follow up as scheduled.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Link employees\u2019 performance to organizational goals.<\/strong>\u00a0Reinforce the value of your employees\u2019 contributions by giving specific examples of how their work and positive behaviors serve the organization and its customers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At Staffworks, we understand and appreciate the value of constructive feedback.
